The Danaida monarch butterfly from the family Nymphalidae is one of the best known in North America and is also often found in European countries and even in northern Africa. If you spend time in the countryside or even if you visit parks frequently, you may have seen this beautiful orange-and-black butterfly, which has a wingspan of up to ten centimetres.
The word ‘monarch’ appears in the butterfly’s name because of its large size and wide habitat, which it ‘rules’. It is also known to have been named after a European monarch.
